{TUTORIAL} Table Runner >>> Pillow Cover

The bedroom “face lift” saga continues. My most recent project was to make some throw pillows for the bed. I need a few more, but these were a quick start. I found this table runner at TJ Maxx for $12.99 and knew that it had to find a place in the the room. At first, the plan was to sew it onto my existing white shower curtain to cover up the green stripe detail on the bottom (the table runner is 72 inches long and the shower curtain is 72 inches wide). After some time looking at the table runner, I realized that the fact that it had a backing material would allow me to make pillow covers out of it. Perfect!

I like a good DIY project. But I only like DIY projects that can be done quickly and easily and on a budget. If they take too long, I lose steam and the project gets put into a closet or the basement. This project is all of those: quick and easy and cheap.

  1. Find a table runner that is made of two layers of fabric.
  2. Measure  it out to make a square with a little extra on the cut edges to account for seams.
  3. Stuff the pillow into the slipcover. I chose to use both of the ends of the table runner as it eliminated the need to sew more than one side.  If you have to sew two sides, you’ll need to sew one of them before stuffing the pillow.
  4. Fold the edges inward and pin together. Stitch the edge all the way across. DONE!

I only have two throw pillows on the bed thus far, but it’s a start. I desperately need to get my hands on some remnants-something with some pattern–but that’s hard to do when you rarely actually go to the store. What to do next…

Okay this tutorial post is awesome! I’m the same way with all sorts of projects…I need to/like to do it simply and get it done. I love the idea of using a table runner – I see so many of these here and there very cheaply, and now I know what I can do with them (since I’m forever buying them anyway)! :-)
