What in the world is a swag bag?! In my head, I imagine a cute purse strutting it’s stuff down the street. Yes, I know this is ridiculous and childish, but I like to think that I have a great imagination. Right?
So here is what a swag bag is according to the most reliable of sources.
Urban Dictionary: A goodie bag that contains various useless yet irreplaceable items packed into a dufflebag, usually given at parties or by sponsers.
eHow: Swag bags historically referred to burglarized content in a sack that was swung haphazardly over-the shoulder after a heist. The modern connotation is much more appealing. It is an adult goodie bag that contains free samples given by sponsors to high-profile guests.
Wikipedia: Promotional merchandise, promotional items, promotional products, promotional gifts, or advertising gifts, sometimes nicknamed swag or schwag, are articles of merchandise (often branded with a logo) used in marketing and communication programs.
I had always thought of them related to the big awards shows. Seems they are much more prevalent than I had thought. Who doesn’t love a bag of goodies?! I certainly do!
I’m going to my first blog conference in a couple of weeks and was asked if I wanted to contribute something or sponsor the swag bags. The what?!? I thought to myself as I read the e-mail. Needless to say I did not e-mail back to ask what it was as that would be super embarrassing. I knew we weren’t talking Louis Vuitton purses or diamond earrings so after reading perusing the internet a bit, I thought I had a pretty clear idea of what we were talking about and I was all in.
Hmm…next question was what to put together? I wanted to represent the shop’s products, but more than that. Hence, a mini “party in a pouch”. I think they turned out super fun and cute. I didn’t have a lot of time, so putting together 250 little pouches was a bit of a project. Whew! Fun stuff though.
This conference sure is turning out to be a lot of work to attend! But I’m enjoying every minute. I think my husband is sick of having stuff all over the house, but he’s being gracious. Love that guy!

Post a picture of your swag! Yes, I have received swag bags. Usually they are a bunch of stuff you don’t use like business cards and ballpoint pens, but once I received a colored lipbalm I loved. I ended up ordering a bunch online when that one ran out. It’s a great way to expose a lot of people to your concept. I’m sure whatever you put together is super cute and will drive traffic to your site. So proud of your business!
