Just as color sets the stage and color coordination sets the mood, décor transforms the ordinary into something special. Think of it as the “party dress” for your location. This is much easier to show than to tell, so my I’ll limit my words and share some visuals to explain my approach.
All décor starts with a color palate (see color post). The next step is to analyze the area you are decorating. Are you decorating your own home? Which room/rooms? Outside? Are you decorating at a different venue? If so, what do they offer and are there restrictions to what you can do? If the scene is set and the “dress” suits the party, maybe just a few accessories to personalize the space are needed.
Once you know if you can tape banners to the wall or supply your own centerpieces, you can begin your search for “the perfect party dress”–coming up with a decor that suits the party perfectly. If you have tables, think about their sizes and how they will be dressed. This is a great place to add your color.
Now, take a hint from your invitation. Is it uber simple or is it all gussied up with frills and froo froos and all that jazz? Is it a theme? A style? (preppy, modern, Parisian) Take your cues and plan accordingly.
Two of my favorite tools to decorate with are fabric and paper. Instead of telling, I thought I’d just show you what I mean!
backdrop // fabric flags // table runners // tablecloth // napkins //canopy // bunting // fabric strip backdrop //bottle toppers // embellished signage // wreath // flower cake topper
napkin rings // newspaper wallflower // wall collage // hats & ice cream cone balloons // kraft paper resolution wall // table covering // paper garland // banner // paper chain backdrop // lanterns & tissue paper flowers // medallion wall collage // paper airplane centerpiece // flower centerpiece // paper boat place card // large paper flowers // paper rosette garland
Flowers are always a wonderful way to add life to the look of a party as well.
Don’t neglect the entry way to your event—the front door, for example. A wreath does wonders.
Remember to have fun with it–only do as much as you’ll enjoy and don’t become overwhelmed. And be creative! I’d love to hear ways in which you have decorated parties that are unique.
Come back next week for more of…
